Protective Packaging

Protective packaging is packaging that is designed and constructed of materials to protect the goods from atmospheric, magnetic, electrostatic, vibration or shock damage. There are many different types of protective packaging including air pillows, angle or edge board, bubble wrap or foam packaging, partition, corrugated wrapping, cradle, foam-in-place, packaging insert, packing peanuts, panels, trays, and void fillers.

Air pillows and angle boards are a couple types of protective packaging. Air pillow packaging uses inflated air packets to cushion and secure fragile products and materials. Angle boards, or edge boards, have a channel-like design. This type of protective packaging protects the corners of products during transport. Bubble wrap or foam packaging is also available. These types of protective packaging materials are wrapped around, or inserted to secure the product or material. 

Partitions, corrugated wrapping, and cradles are also types of protective packaging. Partition packing uses container partitions to subdivide the package to orient the products. Corrugated wrap is a sponge-like, paperboard product used to cushion fragile products. Similarly, cradles are a type of protective packaging that is used to secure cylindrical objects and prevent them from rolling during transport. 

Other types of protective packaging include foam-in-place packaging, inserts, packing peanuts, panels, trays, and void fillers. Foam-in-place packaging systems dispense foam between liners, encapsulating the product. Packaging inserts are used to will empty space, complete package housing, and to secure the product. Packing peanuts or loose-fill materials surround, cushion, and protect contents. Wood panels or sheeting may be used to divide package contents. Trays are another type of protective packaging that provides top-to-bottom protection. Void filler protective packaging fill empty space to prevent products from colliding with each other. Other types of protective packaging may also be available. 

When selecting protective packaging, you may choose from a range of features. Additional features include whether the packaging is biodegradable, disposable, have electric or thermal insulation, inflatable, has a vapor barrier, is recyclable, reusable, has shock or vibration dampening functions, and is UV or weather resistant. Other features for protective packaging may also be available.
